Types of Septic Systems: Conventional, Chamber, Aerobic and More
A homeowner overview of common septic system designs and why maintenance differs by type.
The familiar tank-and-gravity-drainfield is only one septic design. Soil, groundwater, lot size, treatment goals and local rules can require other technologies.
Conventional and chamber systems
These distribute septic-tank effluent into soil using trenches, gravel/pipe or chambers.
Aerobic treatment units
ATUs intentionally add oxygen with engineered mechanical components and typically require more frequent maintenance.
Other designs
Mounds, drip distribution, sand filters and other systems address site or treatment constraints.
