Inspect and pump
EPA says the average household system should be inspected at least every three years. Household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, with actual frequency depending on use and tank conditions.
Manage water
Fix leaks, spread high-water-use activities and use efficient fixtures so the drainfield is not hit with unnecessary hydraulic spikes.
Protect what goes down the drain
Keep wipes, hygiene products, grease, paint, solvents, pesticides and other unsuitable waste out of toilets and drains.
Protect the field
Keep vehicles and structures off the drainfield, route roof/surface drainage away and maintain appropriate shallow-rooted cover.
