A working septic tank normally contains liquid near its operating level. The maintenance concern is accumulated solids, restricted flow or a downstream problem—not simply that the tank looks wet or full.
Warning signs
Multiple slow fixtures, gurgling, sewage backup, strong odors or wet drainfield conditions can signal a septic problem.
Liquid level is not enough
What matters is whether inlet and outlet flow are normal, how much scum/sludge has accumulated and whether the drainfield accepts effluent.
Reduce water during active symptoms
If the system is backing up, cut unnecessary water use and arrange professional assessment.
Do not keep adding products
Repeatedly flushing treatment products cannot diagnose a blocked line, damaged component or saturated drainfield.
