Septic Tank Baffles: Small Components With a Big Job
What inlet and outlet baffles do, common failure issues, and why a treatment tablet cannot repair them.
Baffles or sanitary tees guide flow at the septic tank inlet and outlet and help keep scum and solids from moving toward the drainfield.
Inlet function
The inlet structure directs incoming wastewater and helps keep the scum layer from interfering with the house sewer connection.
Outlet function
The outlet draws liquid from the clearer middle zone rather than the top scum layer. Some systems add an effluent filter.
Failure is physical
Corrosion, damage or missing components can disrupt normal flow or allow solids downstream.
Treatment products cannot repair hardware
A broken baffle requires inspection and physical repair, not a bacteria or oxygen tablet.
